Women who have reached 50 and beyond know that life holds some special surprises. Once the “second adolescence” of peri-menopause subsides, our world can become far richer. The reason for this is due to one special choice: if we choose to take the road less travelled (in other words, stop obsessing about the negative aspects of age) we can return to a fuller, more authentic version of ourselves.
This can be a happy revelation since many of us lost that original, unique self at puberty.
Our hormones kicked in, we wanted to appear attractive (both physically and personality-wise), and our overriding need was to fit in with our particular group and the prevailing fashion of the times. In our rush for conformity and acceptance, we lost much of the spunky drive of that one-of-a-kind little girl who once was us.
Now is the time to get her back! If we can allow ourselves the liberation of age, we can learn the power of saying “no,” we are no longer bound by the constant need to please, and we can go after what we want without fearing the judgment that might come with pursuing our own goals.
So take a few moments and think of your long ago self:
- What were your dreams?
- What did you love to do?
- Which talents came naturally to you?
- What made you happy?
By getting back in touch with the wild and free child you were, you can truly go back to the future and reignite your unique spark. That spunky little girl just might be alive and well and, given the chance, is ready to thrive once again… another joyful gift of being on the Feisty Side of Fifty!
