Forget a young man’s fancy—the longer, sunnier days are turning this old gal’s fancy toward thoughts of rebirth, renewal and all the promise of the season. I used to think I suffered from SAD (Seasonal Affect Disorder) because the grey, wet winter days could get me down. However, now that I’ve been on the planet lo these many years, most of my ups and downs have mellowed. Thankfully, I now make it through winter just fine.

Yet, there is something so invigorating about watching the first buds burst forth and the leaves start to return to the trees sporting that distinctive yellowish-green color of early spring. It gets me every time! I may not be excited enough to attempt any spring-cleaning (never a biggie on my list) but I do get a burst of energy to do some psychic cleaning.

My dear friend, Joyce Mason, over at Hot Flashbacks Cool Insights has long suggested that winter is actually not a good time for New Year’s Resolutions. Our bodies are programmed to react to the various seasons on a deep and cellular level and winter is a time for dormancy and rest. Spring is when we naturally become energized and driven to express our colorful talents just as the blossoms are adorning Mother Nature.

As women past fifty, we’ve experienced many springs over our lifetime but the joy of this very special time of year never gets old. Therefore, let us fill our days with activities that put a bloom in our cheek, a spring in our step, and, truly celebrate our own rites of spring.

How do you plan to heed the call of season? In which ways will you show off your unique color? How will you reignite all of your fabulous boomer flower power? And, last but definitely not least, how will you go out and show the world just how feisty a woman over fifty can be?!

Women over fifty know the truth: rather than being on the dark and depressing downhill of life, the majority of us are opening up to new experiences and challenging ourselves like never before! Moreover, this happy fact is especially true for baby boomer women. Our generation, blessed in so many ways, can add another huge plus to our list: that of aging boldly and bodaciously as feisty old-broads living life to the fullest!

Rather than believing our worth and self-esteem flew the coop along with our children, our empty nests provide us with both the time and the opportunity to pursue long neglected interests and passions. And, as older women, this isn’t all we’ve got going—we also have the internal drive to explore unchartered and unfulfilled territory. “If not now, when?” becomes an insistent call that sets our course on turbocharge.

In addition to this age-related calling, we older gals have released ourselves from much of the self-doubt that plagued so many of us in our younger years. As one dear friend recently put it: “I made a decision that 2010 was going to be the year of ‘I can do’ and step out of my chains and prisons of fear and self-doubt.” My friend has recently turned fifty and this birthday seems to signal a watershed marker for women to flex their muscles and burst free from the social and self-imposed roadblocks to success.

Yes, we will experience setbacks and self-doubt but, at our age, we’ve got the wisdom, the strength, and the inner resources to keep on track and persevere. So, here’s to counting our blessings, following our bliss, and making our own mark on the world as we choose it to be.

In my introduction on Feisty Side of Fifty Radio, I proudly proclaim there are “no invisible shrinking violets here” and I mean it! If any generation of women can retire that musty, old shroud of invisibility that has been used for centuries to demean older women… it is the boomers! After all, we’re the proud, the willful, the revolutionary, and the trailblazing generation that burst through the gender barrier. So this age thing is just a drop in the bucket for us!

And, while you’re trailblazing, drop on over to Hot Flashbacks, Cool Insights and The Perimenopause Blog. Two of my very favorite boomer bloggers have honored me with posts about my work. Please do stop by and leave a comment!
