Women of maturity… your time has come!
Menopausal zest is Mother Nature’s gift to women on the far side of 50. This happy surprise provides us with both the freedom and the energy to engage in new behaviors as discrete and self-directed women. And it is during this transformative time that we often discover the full expression of our gifts. Nevertheless, identifying and claiming these talents might take some reflection and thought because many of our natural abilities may have lain dormant for years. (We’ve often been too busy focusing on serving the needs of others to have put the necessary thought and energy into developing our unique gifts.) So now is the perfect time to recognize your own, unique genius!
Do not shy away from that word. Genius was originally defined as “guiding spirit.” It’s related to the Latin meaning: “to bring into being, create, produce.” Because certain individuals could produce exceptional results, they were considered particularly powered by genius (the guiding spirit). Therefore, should you take the time to acknowledge and give focus to your own guiding spirit, allow it to lead you to your highest potential, there’s no limit to what you might achieve.
Clues to your own personal genius can be found within “special stories.” These are peak experiences—those that made you feel good about yourself and provided you with a sense of fulfillment. Take some time to identify five occasions when you achieved something you were proud of, something that energized you and gave you a sense of enjoyment in the actual process as well as the result.
Consider the following:
- What made was this particular project especially meaningful to you?
- What were the steps you took to make it happen?
- Which skills did you use?
- What was the end result? Did you benefit others? Did you make something more beautiful? Did you come up with an innovative idea that improved something?
As you write out your stories, think in terms of the specific skills or actions you used to achieve your desired outcome. Therein lie the clues to your own special brand of genius. And, fueled by menopausal zest, this genius is one heckuva mighty force belonging to those of us lucky enough to be on the feisty side of fifty!
