Due to the hormonal changes at menopause, older women exhibit greater needs for self-expression and achievement. In many ways, we shift our focus and energies away from caretaking and meeting the needs of others to reclaiming and renewing our essence as discrete and self-directed women.
Now is the time we deserve to celebrate our internal sense of freedom and fully express ourselves—both in our opinions and through our creative outlets. We can and need to choosethose aspects of our lives that give us energy, engage our hearts and bring us joy. Otherwise, we simply become old.
In order to make the best choices for yourself (evaluate), it is necessary to become very clear about what is important to you at this time in your life (your values). As women, we have spent much of our lives nurturing those around us that we have likely disconnected from our own needs. Values are sometimes called “windows to the soul.” As such, they are the clues to uncovering your unique passions. In other words, values are your inner guideposts to living life with purpose and fulfillment.
Examples of Values: Time freedom, Variety, Contribution to society, Developing people, Influencing others, Belonging, Physical activity, Intellectual stimulation, Recognition, Upholding traditional ideals, Respected for knowledge, Personal growth, Detail & Accuracy, Spirituality
So start to engage your own sense of freedom by first recognizing what you value. Be specific with your answers:
- What is your personal definition of success for yourself at this time in your life?
- What are your markers for achieving that success?
- What aspects of your life and work are most important to you now and why?
- What aspects of your like no longer serve you?
- How are you honoring your own voice?
