Over 50? Then you have a big choice to consider: do you want to keep your life open to new experiences and your options expanding or will you allow your world to shrink?
Growing old is all about contraction. If we don’t make efforts to the contrary, our shoulders will droop over time, our skin will wrinkle and our opportunities will narrow. Physical markers of the years passing are difficult to deal with, but nothing will age you more than a weariness of spirit. “Been there, done that,” and “same old, same old” can’t help but narrow your outlook and rob you of your energy.
Now, more than ever before, we need to consciously and consistently enlarge our worlds. We need to step away from the protective, but limiting, life we have created and force ourselves to take risks and embrace change. Stepping out of the box can be frightening but it can also bring forth tremendous energy, enhanced self-esteem and a renewed joy in living.
So think about ways that you can be bold and break through your self-imposed barriers. It’s always best to start small and then increase your barrier-busting challenges as your courage and daring begin to strengthen. You might consider:
- Taking a class at a community college or adult school
- Speaking up and stating your opinions with greater force at work and with friends
- Learning a new form of self-expression: photography, ceramics, writing or gardening
- Doing things that scare you
One of the biggest differences between a vital, multi-faceted life and one of limited options is complacency. The years are swiftly passing and we do not want to leave this world never having fully lived. So make waves, take risks and go for it. After all, they don’t call it “the feisty side of fifty” for nothing!
