Retirement is one of the most important changes in somebody’s life. It is an emotional event for the retiree but also for their colleagues. That’s why it’s important for the retirement party to be memorable for both the employee who’s retiring and the employees who remain. A couple of nice ideas will make the party unique and fun.
Invite old colleagues
Events like this are aimed to look back on one’s career, so it’s normal to have former employees invited. These are the people who meant a lot to the person retiring, for example, a favorite manager or a secretary that was there the longest. Think about all the employees who have had an important influence on your colleague and make sure they are there.
Make something memorable as a team
Together, come up with a great gift made by everybody from the office/company. It can be something simple, like a large card signed by everybody or something more challenging: co-workers can make a written note or a photo before the party so that you can collect them all and make a scrapbook. It’s also nice to set up a website with a short overview of your colleague’s career and a place where everybody can post their wishes and messages.
Provide an Instagram feed
It’s normal to have a professional photographer at the party, but truth be told, most of the attendees will take pictures with their mobile devices, so it would be nice to create an Instagram feed specifically for the event where everybody can upload their photos and create a mutual album as a long-lasting memory. The photos can also be used for the company’s website to celebrate employee’s achievements.
To keep the party dynamic, you can organize a couple of games for everybodyto participate. For instance, you can play a slideshow trivia game with pictures of pop culture references from the time the retiree started working in the company. Each guess can be awarded with a small prize. Another guessing game would consist of reading out sayings and stories about the guest of honor, while the others try to guess the context.
A brief presentation on the employee
The guest of honor’s contribution and accomplishments should be presented, together with funny stories and heart-warming memories. Depending on the character of the retiree, the presentation can be more or less formal – after all, it’s all about them.
Include a photo booth
As retirement parties are mainly about having fun, consider adding a photo booth to it. They are not reserved for just one occasion – They are now featured with various backdrops, so it’s possible to have a custom backdrop hire for a specific occasion, like a retirement party. It’s original, it’s fun and it creates great memories.
The inevitable party details
As it’s a party, don’t save up on balloons and lighting. The visuals need to send a message that it’s a cheerful event. Also, alcohol should be provided – maybe not an open bar but definitely champagne when the toast is in order. It would be also good to organize transportation for the alcohol, but also a ride home for everybody who’ll need it when the party finishes.
This is something that needs to be organized at least a month before the actual party but is well-worth the trouble. A video camera is set up in a private are where every employee can go and be recorded while giving a farewell message to the guest of honor. The raw footage needs to be sent to a professional for the final editing, and the video can be played at the party and given to the guest of honor as one of the gifts.
Retirement party should be fun and memorable – that’s why a few people should be in charge of the organization and they should take their time planning it. In the end, it will be a pleasurable event for everybody included.
