Women over 50 are blessed with more choices than in our earlier years. Although the demands of a job, caring for aging parents, and supporting boomerang offspring can be taxing, they’re generally not as critically demanding as overseeing a brood of young children or building a career. Therefore, as the day-to-day obligations lesson, we can enjoy the gift of time and focus with greater frequency.
But what to do? As our attention shifts from caring for others to caring for our personal needs and desires, many women are at a loss. Literally! They’ve lost themselves in the doing for those around them and haven’t a clue as to who they really are and what they truly want.
If this is true for you, a great place to begin to find yourself is by taking a look at what you value. In other words—evaluate your values!
In order to make the best choices for yourself (evaluate), it is necessary to become very clear about what is important to you at this time in your life (your values). Values are sometimes called “windows to the soul.” As such, they are the clues to uncovering your passion and to living life with purpose and fulfillment.
Examples of Values: Taking on challenges, Time freedom, Variety, Contribution to society, Developing people, Influencing others, Belonging, Physical activity, Intellectual stimulation, Recognition, Upholding traditional ideals, Respected for knowledge, Personal growth, Detail & Accuracy, Spirituality
Ask yourself the following and be specific with your answers:
- What is your personal definition of success for yourself at this time in your life?
- What are your markers for achieving that success?
- What aspects of your life and work are most important to you now and why?
- What would you do if you knew you could not fail?
This exercise is worth your time and thought because by knowing what you truly value, you have the keys to building a powerful, life-enhancing future. And, along with being extra feisty, that’s a pretty amazing place to be!
