For many years of birthdays, my mother-in-law always joked that she was turning 39…again. When my friends met her, they were amazed that she was even my husband’s mom. She just looks so young, they told me. When her oldest son hit his 40s, though, she had to adjust that number a tad bit. Still, years later, even now, she looks much younger than her true age.
As I’ve aged and said goodbye to decades of youth, I realized how my mother-in-law always looked so youthful. No, she didn’t invest in crazy products or laser treatments. In fact, I remember her praising Pond’s cold cream, as she told me that’s what her grandma used. Her youthful glow had nothing to do with gimmicks; her graceful aging had more to do with how she cared for herself on a daily basis.
My mother-in-law believes that women—as moms, wives, and professionals—tend to put ourselves last, when, in fact, we need to put ourselves first sometimes. She always tries to take time for her own needs, and she encouraged me to try to do that as well. I don’t always succeed, though.
As we age, as the decades pass, we need to embrace ourselves and meet our personal needs. So often, we make ourselves take last place. And while sacrifices of time for our children, grandchildren or spouses is admirable, we need to step back and take a break for healthy ‘me’ time.
We lose ourselves in our daily roles, but we can’t let those roles define us. Every once in awhile, pamper yourself on purpose! Find time to treat yourself right with these 10 ways to let you shine bright:
- Get a new hairstyle!
We all get in style ruts…especially with our hair. I just had bangs cut a few days ago, and I like the new kicky and perky look that they bring to my face. If you’ve held onto the same hairstyle, schedule an appointment and opt for a new look. Or go bold and rock a new hair color. Style doesn’t have age boundaries, and neither does your hair. Go red, blonde or maybe even pink like Helen Mirren!
- Catch a flick with a friend.
Call up a favorite friend and head to the movies to see a flick. Whether you buy tickets to see a funny romance, a crazy horror film or a drama, grab your girls and head out for an evening.
Everyone has a favorite candy or dessert. Treat yourself to a tower of chocolate treats, some creamy gelato or your favorite cheesecake. Whatever your sweet tooth craves, indulge a bit!
If you’re life is a bit chaotic, schedule a time for a massage. Thirty minutes of pampering will leave you feeling relaxed, rejuvenated and ready to take on the world!
- Add a pop of color.
Everyone has a color that makes them smile. Embrace your favorite with that pop of color on your nails. Whether you choose a mani, pedi or both, that uplifting color will make you smile. If you’re afraid of all green nails, have a bold green painted on only your ring finger nail and leave the rest neutral toned. Or choose a French manicure to surround the bold nail.
- Embrace nature.
Feeling down? Head outside for a walk and open your eyes to the beauty around. Take time to breathe and just notice the world around you. Sit in a park and just relax and enjoy the simplicity of a little alone time. According to Psychology Today, some studies may point to a correlation between “our relationship with nature” and our happiness.
- Rebel…a little.
Yes, you can rebel at any age. This doesn’t mean getting a tattoo—although, get one if you want! Do something you think you’d never do. Be brave, be bold.
- Read a steamy book!
Channel your naughty side. Grab a book that makes you tingle! Check out “50 Shades of Grey” or Henry Miller’s “Tropic of Cancer.”
- Add to your wardrobe.
Buy a new top, a new pair of pants, a skirt…buy one item that makes you feel beautiful and inspired! Just because.
Often, we don’t get enough rest. Take a nap…or just step away and lie down for an hour. Just to daydream or rejuvenate.
No matter how you choose to pamper yourself, promise to put you first…just once. You deserve to be on the top of your to-do list!
