Forget the Passion: I Need a Paycheck!
Baby boomers—especially many baby boomer women—have been hit hard by the current economic downturn. Just when those of our generation were getting ready to retire, the long-awaited golden years were ripped away, replaced by the need for an income-producing job.
Although my book is entitled, Land the Job You Love, and I do believe we’ve more than earned the right to enjoy what we do at our age, economic necessity can far override passion. If you’ve got bills to pay and limited resources, you’ll find yourself needing a paycheck no matter what.
On that note, I had the great pleasure of interviewing Betsy Werley, Executive Director of The Transition Network and we discussed this very topic. Betsy is a frequent speaker and panel member at events addressing the challenges and issues faced by women over fifty. Her insights are drawn from her interactions with participants as well as her own journey to reemployment after fifty–and they’re dead on.
