Unleash Your Inner Success GPS
As a woman over 50, you’re entering your peak and productive years. In fact, Margaret Mead described this life stage using the term, “menopausal zest.” Studies show that she picked the perfect descriptor. Women report many of their happiest, most dynamic, and personally fulfilling years to be those after fifty.
I’ve written many times on this blog that, far from representing an ending, the biggest surprise of menopause is that this major biomarker signifies the beginning of a woman’s life in many regards. Our estrogen stores drop and so does their inhibiting effect on our testosterone levels. A number of our attitudes and behaviors change and we generally exhibit greater needs for independence, self-assertion, and mastery. In other words, we sprout our chin whiskers, become more outspoken, and start to strut our stuff with a vengeance!
So notice the cues your inner GPS is telling you:
Envy: If you find yourself jealous of a certain friend and what she has accomplished, that’s a huge clue you need to get more of what she has for yourself. Rather than wasting time and energy feeding the green monster, start making plans to move in that direction and begin taking small steps to actualize your goals.
Admiration: We often admire in others what we wish to develop in ourselves. Think of celebrities, historical figures, or people you know whom you admire. Identify the personality traits you find so appealing. Pinpoint ways they interact with others to achieve their ends. Home in on their talents and characteristics and make a list. Then see how these attributes compare with your own and begin to develop those that will make you a more admirable person in your own eyes.
Energy: Start to notice when you feel especially energized. What activities are you doing? Which skills are you using? What are the outcomes you’re seeing from your efforts? Energy is one of the biggest clues to finding fulfillment from what you do. Whether you’re performing in your job, pursuing a hobby, or engaging with family activities, making a mental note of your energy levels can go a long way to identifying where your passions lie.
So take advantage of this very special time in your life and make certain your inner GPS is focusing you on your own track for success. After all, you’re now a woman of maturity, have paid your dues in service to others, and deserve to feel both feisty and fulfilled!
