Women Over 50—Putting a Bit of Spring Into Our Step!
Forget a young man’s fancy—the longer, sunnier days are turning this old gal’s fancy toward thoughts of rebirth, renewal and all the promise of the season. I used to think I suffered from SAD (Seasonal Affect Disorder) because the grey, wet winter days could get me down. However, now that I’ve been on the planet lo these many years, most of my ups and downs have mellowed. Thankfully, I now make it through winter just fine.
Yet, there is something so invigorating about watching the first buds burst forth and the leaves start to return to the trees sporting that distinctive yellowish-green color of early spring. It gets me every time! I may not be excited enough to attempt any spring-cleaning (never a biggie on my list) but I do get a burst of energy to do some psychic cleaning.
My dear friend, Joyce Mason, over at Hot Flashbacks Cool Insights has long suggested that winter is actually not a good time for New Year’s Resolutions. Our bodies are programmed to react to the various seasons on a deep and cellular level and winter is a time for dormancy and rest. Spring is when we naturally become energized and driven to express our colorful talents just as the blossoms are adorning Mother Nature.
As women past fifty, we’ve experienced many springs over our lifetime but the joy of this very special time of year never gets old. Therefore, let us fill our days with activities that put a bloom in our cheek, a spring in our step, and, truly celebrate our own rites of spring.
How do you plan to heed the call of season? In which ways will you show off your unique color? How will you reignite all of your fabulous boomer flower power? And, last but definitely not least, how will you go out and show the world just how feisty a woman over fifty can be?!

As soon as I see bits of green peeping up through my winter ravaged perennials…I get out my trekking poles for walks in the park. The poles help with balance for added enjoyment because I don’t have to worry about losing my balance. It is a glorious time of year with lots to anticipate. Lovely post and comment.

Thanks for the mention, Eileen! My friends and I had our annual Spring Equinox get-together Monday. We planted our metaphorical seeds–resolutions of what we want to manifest during the natural year from spring through autumn. We do this on slips of paper cut egg-shaped like seeds, each intention being a seed. We place them in colorful envelopes with a label that looks like a seed packet. During the year, we can take out our intentions and see how they’re growing. Some need culling, others need watering or fertilizer. The visual metaphor really keeps the pursuit of these dream seeds alive! It’s fun to look into my packet from a couple of years ago to see which seeds I culled out, which ones grew into full-scale planets, and which ones I’m still working on!
As always, your spirited take on the topic of the day is a great boost! Happy Natural New Year.
