Holiday Memories Boomer Style

The holidays are upon us. As I make my final preparations for the big day, I can’t help but be reminded of Christmas past. As a child of the fifties, my thoughts turn to one particular Christmas and the eagerly anticipated Ballerina Doll I hoped to find under the tree. To my immense delight she was there waiting for me, decked out in her blue tutu and pink rubber ballet slippers. Her feet were flexible and I soon had her on toe point, twirling about the living room.

ATT000761919My brother got a set of Lincoln Logs and, when I tired of all the twirling, the two of us built a fort that could withstand even the most feared of enemy onslaughts. I can still recall the sense the pride we felt in our cunning design. It consisted of a tricky placement special “spy logs” where sentinels could hide, spot the enemy, and warn the others of the impending battle. Yes, we were pretty clever—potential Pentagon material, for sure!

Years later, when my daughter was young, I remember my dad and husband working feverishly on Christmas Eve to construct a Barbie Townhouse. The task was daunting and there wasn’t much time to pull it all together. But they rose to the challenge and Barbie was soon ensconced in her new digs. She was, of course, none the worse for wear considering the rapidity of her move. Looking as glamorous as ever in her pink ball gown, she sat regally on her plastic couch and waited for morning.

So many memories of happy times gone by fill my heart. It is with these sentiments that I wish you, my boomer sisters, all the joys of the season. May your holidays be filled with the special warmth of family and friends and may each of you enjoy your share of blessings in the New Year. The holidays are truly a special time of year so treasure every moment and don’t forget to be as feisty as you please—New Year’s resolutions are just around the corner!

I am so happy to finally get to your post. It has not been working for me for a couple of weeks.

A wonderful Christmas was had here with one daughter of the three…lots of reminiscing of the extravagance of past years and the goofy things those 3 little gals did…like carefully unwrapping presents before Christmas day and then carefully re-wrapping them!…best way to stop that was to use that classy duct tape in all its silver glory!!

My favorite was a toy vanity set, the primping “dresser” variety with real mirror, brushes, and play make-up. There were so many others to love: pop-it beads, roller skates, ice skates, Etch-a-Sketch. One of my faves, always, was a big box of crayons. If I didn’t get the 100-color box every year, I was pouting!

Here’s to the joy of remembering simpler times and simpler joys. Thanks for this sweet gift of great memories.

    Merry Christmas, Eileen!
