Women Over Fifty—Fashion for Your Holidays!
Being baby boomer women, we’ve experienced our share of the holidays. Thank goodness I’ve ceased my seasonal tour through wacko-ville! Frenzied shopping, baking, wrapping, and standing in long lines at the post office is a thing of the past. I’ve cut my list to a minimum and, as the leaves blanket the ground with their autumn finery, I no longer grow the nervous pit in my stomach that used to herald in “the season to be maniacal.”
Nevertheless, I still want to look my festive best at holiday gatherings and I recently had the good fortune to interview Clinton Kelly from TLC’s What Not to Wear. I’m a fan of the show because both Clinton and his co-host, Stacy London, have a sharp eye and an even sharper tongue. Although they throw some sassy barbs at their participants in the beginning, the show always ends on a happy note. The “big reveal” has friends and family cheering the newly glamorized fashion plate while she beams with confidence and style. (I’m a sucker for the heartwarming stuff.)
Clinton had some great tips on holiday fashion for both our persons and our homes. He suggested ways to add sparkle and shine that wouldn’t break the bank, which, as we know, is already strained this time of year. He also threw out a special caution for women over fifty. There’s a certain article of holiday wear that our friend, Mr. Kelly, just can’t abide. You’ll have to listen to the brief interview (10 minutes) to find out just what he referred to, but he promises that wearing it will age us. In fact, Clinton finds this garb so gross that he called it “frumpa-dumpa!”
So before you put that turkey in the oven or pull out the holiday decorations, take some time to plan and do a little shopping for yourself. You’ll want to be your smashing best this year and shine in all your holiday finery. No more “frumpa-dumpa,” it’s feisty and fabulous for us!

My daughter says that it is important to choose clothes that are age-appropriate no matter what age you are. I say, if the dress fits and looks great on you… wear it!
One of the things I love to do besides plan the meal is figure out what I am going to wear. It just makes me feel good! And as the hostess I think it also sets the tone for the festivities.
thanks for sharing!

Thanks for this post. I certainly wish I could wear hot pants again. But I suppose that is not boomer attire. But then why not, if you can get in them, why not wear them around the house, at the beach? What a great reason to lose weight. I think I just motivated myself. Thanks Eileen!

You know, I have never watched that show. I’ve heard of it but it never crossed my radar as a must see show. We had our own version of a “What Not to Wear Fashion Show” at the Boomer Diva Nation conference that was a big hit. I’ll have to check out your interview to see what I may have been missing.
