Women Over Fifty—Broadway Gets Feisty!
Yep, you read that right! First we spirited gals burst through the glass ceiling and traded in June Cleaver’s apron for a briefcase, a stethoscope, and a tool belt. Now we’re busy bustin’ through the formerly formidable age barrier and making grey the new groovy. With enormous sisterly pride, I hereby proclaim us the most wonderfully willful and fabulously feisty generation of women ever to walk the planet!
But even we hard charging gals need to rest once in a while. Now that the popular culture is finally recognizing that the pot of gold doesn’t solely reside in the hands of the under thirty set, there are some new and highly entertaining pastimes aimed at us. NYC Theatre goers are learning the joys of retro and one of the most joyous of all is a musical entitled, “The Marvelous Wonderettes.” It’s gotten rave reviews from the New York Times, Associated Press, Variety and others.
“Wonderettes” features some of our favorite songs from the 50s and early 60s.
You can sing along to “Lollipop,” “Dream Lover,” “Stupid Cupid,” “Lipstick on Your Collar,” “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me,” “It’s My Party,” and “It’s In His Kiss” among others. Or, if you prefer, just snap your bubble gum in rhythm to the beat while rockin’ out in your seat.
As a special deal for Feisty Side of Fifty readers, “Wonderettes” is offering tickets at a discounted rate. So, if you’ll be in New York City and want to treat yourself to a real blast from the past, here’s the discount information. You can:
Visit BroadwayOffers.com and mention code MAINT01
Or CALL 212.947.8844 and mention code MAINT01
Also, for those of you who comment on this post, we’ll hold a drawing and the winner will get two free tickets to the musical! (Even if you’re not in NYC, you can give them to a friend.) The drawing will be held on July 20th and the following rules apply:
· The winner will receive two tickets to see “The Marvelous Wonderettes”
· Transportation will not be provided
· The ticket voucher will be valid on dates between August 3rd and August 31st
And, as an extra bonus, you can also get discounted tickets to a musical review called “For Lovers Only.” Check this one out too—you may decide to enjoy a few love songs along with your classic hits.
1. VISIT BroadwayOffers.com and mention code FOWORD509
2. CALL 212.947.8844 and mention code FOWORD509
Like they said on American Bandstand, you know the music is hip if “it’s got a great beat and you can dance to it!” So don your shirtwaist dress, grab your bobby sox, put your hair in a flip, and rock ‘n’ roll!

What a shame I live so far away. Would have been great to go to.

I love bubbly musicals. Although I live close enough to the City I do not get to go very often. The economical situation of the country has affected our household and hubby has been jobless for a long time. We could really use a night out in the town… Hmmm, I can see myself taking the train, getting off at Penn Station and walking through the warm summer evening towards the theater district. We thouroughly enjoy the show and afterwards we stroll back slowly, crossing Time Square, enjoying the ever alive City, the lights, the people. I am already totally there.

As the PopArtDiva of Nostalgia I would dearly love to see that musical – though I have no plans to head off to the Big Apple in the near future, lol. Maybe I could take Joyce and we could both stay at her Uncle’s, lol!!!
Still, win or not, hopefully – as Joyce said – this will make it to the West Coast and I could see it here! What a evening of fabulous fifty female fun that could be! Martinis and The Marvelous Wonderettes!

Good luck to the winner of this, what a treat! Pity I live on the other side of the globe!!
A fantabulous offer, Eileen, good on you!

The BW play sounds like such fun, Eileen! We used to ride the bus into NY when we lived in central NJ. There is nothing like it. Enjoyed the post! This sounds perfect for Boomers or WOOFers!

Great idea, Eileen! It might be worth the trip to the Big Apple – especially if the tickets are free! Isn’t it good to be a part of such a rocking generation of feisty women??? Gotta love it!

This reminds me of Dreamgirls–which I saw many years ago before it went to Broadway.
I’ll definitely have to let the BDN members who live in NY know about this. This is a very nice offer from you. If you have something else you’d like to give a way for our October event, let me know

Well alright now. I might wear my afro wig. Wish I could still fit into those hot pants. Oh boomer! This is a great idea, I hope whoever wins it makes a total vacation day or week out of it.
What a great and generous idea. But isn’t that just like a babyboomer?

I don’t know anyone currently living in New York that I could crash with in order to see this play, but I sure wouldn’t mind the chance to go. I’m with Cindy Luck about the shaving though. Think I’ll wear petal pushers if I go.

Too fun. I have one question: If I win and wear bobby socks with my poodle skirt, do I have to shave my legs? I mean really–won’t it be dark in the theater? Move over June–Donna Reed is on the way!

Eileen,
What a fun evening–or matinee–this sounds like it will be. While I wouldn’t be caught dead in a shirtwaist dress–I don’t do waist bands–I’m sure I can find something retro to wear just for fun. Will tell my NYC boomer girlfriends about it too.
Thanks for the contest!

Eileen, I love to go to Bway shows but the price is so prohibitive that it causes pangs of guilt. I’d love to go to a show guilt-free–thanks for the chance to win! I’ll let my friends know, too.

What a wonderful opportunity, Eileen–and musical! I hope it comes to the West Coast. It’s enough to tempt me to visit my uncle in NY to see it and him, but I’ve got other priorities this summer. Still, I will follow this wonderful celebration of boomer womanhood and hope to catch it at some point if it tours.
