Women Over Fifty–Secret Recipes to Keep You Cooking
In this next installment of “great books for boomer women,” I’m introducing one that will put frosting on your cake, bring you to the boiling point, have you savoring every word, and leave you salivating for more! Secret Recipes for the Modern Wife has everything you’ll need to heat your burners—it’s packed with “food” for thought on marriage and motherhood. In fact it’s so rich, I like to call it a tongue-in-cheek treasure trove of marital gems!
I’ve interviewed Nava Atlas on Feisty Side of Fifty Radio once before, discussing her numerous and well-loved books on vegetarian and vegan cooking. But this most recent work is a bit of a departure. Rather than providing creative methods for serving up colorful and delicious plant-based meals, Nava serves up recipes such as “Completely Fried Wife with Toast of Total Exhaustion,” “Control-Freak Cookies,” and “Midlife Stress Stuffed Cabbage.” These and other meaty creations are dressed up in a 1950s style “cookbook” complete with full color renderings of the fare de jour and happy, apron-clad homemakers beaming contentedly in their kitchens.
Of course, I had to interview Nava to get the chef’s perspective on her oh-so-witty concoctions. She readily shared a number of her recipes and if you’re currently married, if you ever have been married, or if you’ve ever contemplated marriage, you’ll share our fun. As usual, the interview only takes fifteen minutes, so take a listen. I know this one will leave you chuckling in recognition throughout your day… even if it is spent in the kitchen!
If your mouth is watering for a copy of Secret Recipes, head to Feisty Books for Feisty Women and order your copy right away—it’s an absolutely delicious read! To learn more about Nava’s thoughts on women now and then, head over to her site, “A Long Way… Maybe.“

Eileen,
The title alone grabs me.
I always say Nate & I are cookin’ in the kitchen–but it ain’t food! Her book may offer some more creative ideas.
You always find some of the most interesting people to interview.
