Women Over Fifty—Celebrating the NEW Fifty!
Without a doubt, there’s a band new revolution going on and older women are leading the charge. If you were fortunate enough to be born female, reaching the age of fifty and beyond opens the door to a myriad of amazing transformations—the vast majority of them positive.
Suzanne Braun Levine explores this remarkable time in a woman’s life in her latest book, Fifty Is The New Fifty: Ten Life Lessons for Women in Second Adulthood. Suzanne has been on the frontlines of furthering the lives of women for years. She was the very first editor of Ms. Magazine, produced the Peabody-Award-winning documentary, “She’s Nobody’s Baby: A History of American Women in the Twentieth Century” and has written a number of articles on the topic. She’s also the author of Inventing the Rest of Our Lives: Women in Second Adulthood, a contributing editor to More magazine, and a guest on such shows as Oprah, Good Morning America, Charlie Rose, Today and NPR.
In her latest book, Suzanne captures the voices of women who are confronting change, renegotiating their relationships, and discovering who they are, now that they’re finally grown up.
Among the lessons you’ll learn from reading these fascinating accounts are:
- “No” is not a four-letter word, on the energizing power of standing up for what you mean and what you want.
- Do unto yourself as you have been doing unto others, a new way of getting yourself to the top of the to-do list.
- Your marriage can make it, reassurance that changing your outlook doesn’t have to mean walking away from your marriage.
I had the privilege of interviewing Suzanne on Feisty Side of Fifty Radio. Take a listen—it’s only ten minutes long and can help you reinvent your own aging process.
As I like to say, “Forget over the hill! We gals are just now reaching our peak and Suzanne’s book makes a great guide to realizing our authentic selves as we take our own journey through second adulthood.

What an inspirational and informative interview with Suzanne. I loved the notion of ‘new normal’and the logic for Fifty remaining 50. Great stuff!!

I enjoyed that interview and my favorite part was where she said 50 is the new 50, instead of 50 is the new 30. I loved her reasoning for this!!

Eileen,
Kudos to you for snagging that interview! I just listened and left you a comment on the BlogTalk site. Like Mary, I love what she said about No not being a four letter word–just like Fifty is not anything else but 50.

From learning that “no” is not a four-letter word, to finding a “new normal” when life throws you a curve. Very inspiring. Thanks, Eileen for this great interview!

I love the freedom that Suzanne captures for us–and you don’t need to be over fifty to enjoy her suggestions. Hopefully her suggestions are ones that mothers are (or should be) teaching their children right along! Thanks Eileen. Off to listen to your wonderful interview.

WOW-Do unto yourself as you have been doing unto others. That is something for me to ponder! And would that mean a break for a bit from continuing to do unto the others? Any maybe if I took that break they would start doing for themselves!!
Thanks Eileen…
